Presentation Outline

Non-relational databases are receiving a lot of attention these days as the cloud becomes an important part of many company’s technology infrastructure. With companies like Digg, Facebook, Yahoo and others pushing the boundaries of scalability, relational database technologies have begun to show their limitations.

New types of datastores based on key-value pairs, JSON-documents and object graphs have begun to fill an increasingly important niche. We will look primarily at technologies covered at the recent NoSQL East conference in Atlanta. These include Voldemort, CouchDB, Riak, MongoDB, HBase and Neo4J.

This will be a 2-part presentation. We will start with coverage of the non-relational landscape discussing which problems these technologies are built to handle, categorize the underlying datastores and identify their pros/cons.

In the second part Matthew Lefevre will cover CouchDB and demo some of its features and the administration interface.
